Materials science compendium “PAEK materials” now free for EADT eV members

The fifth part of the e-book series “Materials Science Compendium – Modern dental materials in practical everyday work“ ready for download. In the new book, the authors discuss PAEK materials. Members of EADT eV receive free access to all books from the interactive series.

The digital “Materials Science Compendium – Modern Dental Materials in Practical Everyday Work” is a specialist book that conveys the basics of dental materials science in dentistry and dental technology. Divided into different books, common materials used in prosthetic dentistry are presented. The “youngest” book in the series deals with “PAEK materials”. The author team – Bogna StawarczykAnnett Kieschnick and  Martin Rosentritt – provides a concise and clear overview of the basics for the laboratory and practice as well as further information. Images from ZTM Philipp von Osten and his team (Dentaldesign Erlangen) complete the digital book.

Structure of the interactive book

The reader is introduced to well-founded aspects of PAEK materials in a “playful” way. A short text guides you through the steps involved in making the dentures. The entire manufacturing process is shown – from the choice of materials to polishing and cleaning. In order to keep the main text as simple as possible, detailed explanations were omitted. If necessary, these can be accessed using icons. A detailed glossary accompanies the reader through the book and answers many questions. Learners can use the learning function (similar to flashcards) to check their level of knowledge at any time. A variety of figures, tables and videos illustrate individual aspects. Individual tips and processing instructions help in tricky situations. If you want to delve deeper into the subject, you will find basic information. In addition, useful information from various manufacturers and corresponding links are available.

Content PAEK materials

The polyaryl ether ketone (PAEK) material group has been used in prosthetic dentistry since 2006. There are three subgroups of PAEK:

  • PEEK (polyetheretherketone),
  • PEKK (polyetherketoneketone) and
  • AKP (aryl ketone polymer).

PAEK materials are milled, pressed, printed or deep-drawn for dental use. Depending on the material modification, PAEK is suitable in dentistry for fixed or removable restorations and for temporary restorations. The production of restorations requires a high level of specialist knowledge in the field of materials science in addition to appropriate manufacturing technologies. Both dentists and dental technicians have to deal with the material properties. The book is entirely dedicated to PAEK materials. Ten chapters guide the reader through the various topics. What are the differences between the PAEK variants? How is PAEK frameworks veneered and what should be taken into account when grinding and polishing? All of this is described in detail and in a practical manner in the book. In a separate chapter of the book, the authors provide important information for intraoral fixation. The reader also learns more about the cleaning options for PAEK restorations and the options for any repairs. In the product supplement the reader receives more information about interesting products and their application. Industry partners are the companies Amann Girrbach, bredent, Cendres + Métaux, Gehr, NTI and Zircon tooth.

Freely accessible to members of EADT eV

With the digital materials science compendium, the authors are breaking new ground in dental literature. Various materials for prosthetic dentistry are presented in individual books. Not only is the content up to date, the presentation is also modern and contemporaryThe complexity of the information is easy to grasp thanks to the well-thought-out structure. After purchasing the digital book in the Apple iBooks store, the iBook can be read on any MacOS device (iPad, iPhone, MacBook, iMac, etc.). The individual books can also be purchased as PDF (limited function). All books from the materials science compendium – now also “PAEK materials” – are available to members of EADT eV is free is available for storage, management and analysis.
